2011 Poster Contest Winner!

The Davis Conservation District is pleased to announce Autumn Doyle as the winner of the 2011 Conservation Poster Contest!  Autumn is in the 5th grade and attends King Elementary.  Her poster will go on to compete in the state poster competition.  The winning poster will go on to the nationals.  Prizes will be awarded on both levels.

The poster contest theme was “Forests for People – More Than You Can Imagine”.  The contest was designed to educate students about the important role of forests in everyday life.

Miss Miller’s class received a visit from the Conservation District Board, as well as a 15 minute watershed model demonstration and a pizza party on Monday, November 14th!  In addition, Autumn received a $20.00 cash prize during the visit.  Every student who participated also received a bookmark with a picture of Autumn’s poster on it.

The Davis Conservation District was pleased to have great participation in this first year program!  Six classes from five Davis County schools participated and an impressive fifty two students turned in posters.  The Davis Conservation District thanks all of the teachers that fit this contest into their curriculum and aided in the process of collecting the posters.

Ben Thurgood

Ben Thurgood passed away on February 5, 2011. He was a Davis Conservation District Supervisor for 30 years. He served as Chairman for most of his tenure. Ben was a lifelong dairyman, farmer, and true steward of the land.  He was quick with a smile, and a pleasure to be around and do business with. The Davis Conservation District was very fortunate to have his service all these years.  Thank you Ben for all you have done for the Conservation District, the land and for us!

Volunteer Opportunity

The Davis Conservation District utilizes seed packets to give young students the opportunity to learn more about the process of growing fruits and vegetables.  This year the conservation district plans to distribute approximately 3500 seed packets at the Farm Field Day and Water Fair. In order to assemble the 3500 seed packets, we need the help of volunteers. We have all the necessary supplies and would appreciate all available help. We have the supplies bundled in increments of 400; therefore all volunteers will need to assemble a minimum of 400 seed packets.

This project is perfect for students needing service hours. Also, families, or groups of friends, can work together to assemble the seed packets.

We hope that with the help of volunteers, we will be able to continue distributing seed packets and teaching students about where their food comes from.

The deadline for this project is April 10, 2011.

Please e-mail Lindsey Brooker if you are interested in volunteering for this project.
